Synoicus ypsilophorus is an introduced small quail now local in northern New Zealand. It differs from California quail through its smaller size, streaked brown plumage and lack of a head plume. The bird is compact and mottled warm brown with fine dark streaks. Its short tail and rounded wings are apparent during low, rapid flight.
Populations occur mainly in northern North Island districts and on some offshore islands. Dense grass, wetland edges and low scrub are preferred. It eats seeds, green shoots and small invertebrates on the ground. Birds remain concealed and flush only when approached closely.
New Zealand classifies brown quail as Introduced. Aotea Great Barrier Island and parts of Northland offer chances along quiet grassy tracks.
