Kuaka is a compact auk-like petrel that buzzes over waves on short wings and dives directly into the sea. It is dark above and white below with a short bill, stubby wings and blue feet; little penguins are far larger and do not fly.
It breeds on many predator-free islands around New Zealand, the Chathams and subantarctic groups and feeds close to colonies. Kuaka chase krill and small fish underwater using their wings, and lay one egg in a shallow burrow.
Common diving petrel is At Risk — Relict (NZ Threat Classification). Rats, cats, weka and trampling have removed or reduced accessible colonies. Hauraki Gulf, Cook Strait and southern pelagic trips often see low, fast-flying birds near breeding islands.
