Habitat
Wetlands, damp grassland and shrub margins
Range
Otago and Southland
Size
Snout–vent length up to about 80 mm
The cryptic skink is a moisture-loving Otago and Southland species that spends much of its time hidden in dense ground cover. It is brown with narrow pale and dark longitudinal markings and a finely speckled underside; its muted pattern matches wet grass and litter.
Populations occur patchily in Otago and Southland wetlands and damp lowland vegetation. It is active by day in warm conditions, feeding on invertebrates and small fruit close to damp refuges.
Cryptic skink is At Risk — Declining (NZ Threat Classification). Wetland margins and dense vegetation in southern reserves are the most suitable habitat, though sightings are uncommon.
