The dusky dolphin is an acrobatic Southern Hemisphere dolphin common around parts of the South Island. New Zealand animals are strongly associated with Kaikōura. It has a short beak, dark back, pale belly and swept-back flank markings. Adults are about 1.7–2.1 metres long.
Dusky dolphins occur mainly south of East Cape. Kaikōura, Cook Strait and the lower South Island support regular concentrations. They form social groups and perform leaps and spins. At Kaikōura they often feed offshore at night on fish and squid.
The species is Not Threatened nationally. Bycatch and poorly managed vessel interactions remain potential threats. Kaikōura is New Zealand’s most dependable location. They also occur in Cook Strait and off Marlborough.
