Lower North Island forest, scrub and rank grass
Range
Lower North Island
Size
Snout–vent length up to about 75 mm
The glossy brown skink is a sleek, dark North Island species associated with damp dense cover. Its smooth glossy brown back has subdued striping, while the flanks are darker and the body and tail are notably slender.
Patchy populations occur in the lower North Island, including Wellington-region forests and offshore islands. It moves through ground litter and low vegetation by day, feeding on invertebrates and fruit.
Glossy Brown skink is At Risk — Declining (NZ Threat Classification). Predator-managed lower North Island reserves are the best prospect, though the skink remains concealed.
