Oligosoma grande
Habitat
Schist outcrops in Otago tussockland
Range
Inland Otago
Size
Snout–vent length up to 115 mm; weight up to 30 g
The grand skink is a large Otago rock specialist patterned in black and gold or cream. Its vivid black body is heavily flecked with gold, yellow, cream or greenish marks; the very long toes and tail suit movement over schist.
Eastern and western population groups occupy separated schist landscapes in inland Otago. It basks on rock outcrops, retreats into deep crevices and eats insects plus native fruit.
Grand skink is Threatened — Nationally Increasing (NZ Threat Classification); introduced predators drove severe declines, while fenced refuges and predator control support recovery. Managed Otago conservation sites provide the best chance, but access rules vary and animals remain wary.
