Pia koia is a stocky Kermadec petrel occurring in dark, pale and intermediate colour forms, all with white flashes in the outer underwing. Its bulky body, short square tail, black stubby bill and white underwing flashes give it a skua-like outline. Herald petrel lacks the pale shafts visible on the upperwing.

It breeds throughout most of the Kermadec group, especially islets near Raoul Island, and ranges widely across the South Pacific. The direct flight alternates deep wingbeats with long banking glides; birds may steal food from other seabirds and nest at varying times of year.

Kermadec petrel is At Risk — Naturally Uncommon (NZ Threat Classification). Cats and rats destroyed the former Raoul Island colony, though predator removal allows recolonisation. Kermadec expedition voyages offer the best chance; mainland New Zealand records are scarce.
