Cereopsis novaehollandiae is an introduced Australian goose established locally in New Zealand. It differs from greylag and Canada geese through its grey plumage and short bill with a greenish cere. The bird is bulky and pale grey with black spotting on the wings. Pink legs and the yellow-green cere are distinctive.

Small feral or managed populations occur locally, especially in open coastal country. Its New Zealand distribution is limited and may change. It grazes grasses and herbs mostly on land. Pairs can be territorial near nests and remain together for long periods.

New Zealand classifies the Cape Barren goose as Introduced. Birds may be found around Christchurch wildlife parks and some Canterbury pastoral sites, but truly wild viewing is uncertain.
