Phasianus colchicus is an introduced gamebird widespread in New Zealand lowlands. It differs from other introduced galliforms through the male’s very long pointed tail and colourful head. Males are coppery with a green head, red facial skin and long barred tail. Females are cryptically mottled brown with a shorter tail.
It occurs widely in farmland, rough grass and scrub, especially in the North Island and eastern South Island. Dense cover beside feeding ground is important. It eats seeds, shoots and invertebrates on the ground. Birds usually run from danger but can explode into noisy, powerful flight.
New Zealand classifies common pheasant as Introduced. Tāwharanui Regional Park and rural Hawke’s Bay commonly provide sightings.
