Kākā uhi whero is a brightly coloured introduced parrot established across parts of the North Island. The red head and breast, white cheek, yellow belly and blue wings form a unique pattern; red-crowned kākāriki is mostly green without white cheeks.

Established populations occur around Auckland, Waikato, Wellington and several eastern North Island districts, with local South Island records. Pairs and small flocks feed on grass seed, fruit, flowers and buds and nest in tree cavities.

Auckland’s wooded suburbs and rural edges, Waikato and Wellington parks regularly hold birds.
