Anser anser is represented in New Zealand mainly by introduced and feral birds. It differs from Canada goose through its grey body, pink or orange bill and lack of a black neck. It is a heavy grey goose with a pale-edged back, orange or pink bill and pink legs. Domestic ancestry can produce white or unusually bulky birds.
Feral groups occur locally around parks, farms and wetlands. Distribution is scattered rather than continuous. It grazes grass and takes grain and aquatic plants. Flocks roost beside water and can mix with other introduced geese.
New Zealand classifies greylag goose as Introduced. Western Springs Lakeside Park in Auckland often has feral geese, though ancestry may be mixed.
