Laughing kookaburra is an introduced giant kingfisher whose territorial chorus now sounds around Kawau Island and nearby mainland Auckland. A massive bill, pale head with dark ear patch, brown back, blue wing patch and barred rufous tail make it unmistakable.

The established range extends from Kawau Island and the east coast near Whangārei south to Kaukapakapa, Riverhead and the southern Waitākere Ranges. Family groups pounce from perches on worms, insects, crayfish, frogs, lizards, mice and small birds and nest cooperatively in tree holes.

Kawau Island and wooded country around Warkworth and the northern Auckland coast are the most reliable areas, especially at dawn and dusk.
