Cygnus olor is an introduced swan maintained in small, local New Zealand populations. It differs from black swan through its white plumage, orange bill and black basal knob. Adults are entirely white with a long S-curved neck and orange bill. Young birds are grey-brown before acquiring white plumage.

It occurs locally on ornamental and urban waters rather than throughout the country. Some birds are free-flying, while others remain associated with managed collections. It grazes aquatic plants by upending and also feeds on land. Pairs defend nesting territories vigorously.

New Zealand classifies mute swan as Introduced. Christchurch’s Avon River and nearby urban ponds may hold birds, but populations can change.
