Range

Western Auckland and lower North Island

Sulphur-crested cockatoo is a large introduced white parrot with a bright yellow erectile crest. The white body, black bill and long yellow crest are unmistakable, and the underwings flash yellow in flight.

Small naturalised populations occur around western Auckland and parts of the lower North Island, with wandering birds elsewhere. Noisy flocks dig for roots, open seeds and fruit, strip bark and nest in large tree cavities.

Rural northwest Auckland and areas near long-established North Island populations provide the best chance.
