Spilopelia chinensis is an introduced dove established mainly in northern New Zealand. It differs from Barbary dove through its black neck patch densely spotted with white. The body is pinkish-brown with a grey head and long graduated tail. White-tipped tail feathers flash when the bird flies.
It is common around Auckland and occurs in other northern towns and farmland. Gardens, parks and open woodland provide nesting trees and ground feeding. It feeds mainly on seeds and grain, walking on lawns and bare ground. Its repeated low coo is given from exposed perches.
New Zealand classifies spotted dove as Introduced. Western Springs and suburban parks across Auckland provide dependable views.
