Hemiphaga chathamensis, the parea, is an endemic pigeon confined to the Chatham Islands. It differs from kererū through its larger size, heavier bill and distinct genetics and range. It has iridescent green-purple upperparts and a white breast and belly. The bird is exceptionally bulky, with broad rounded wings.

Parea occur only on main Chatham Island, chiefly in southern forest remnants and recovering habitat. Predator control and forest restoration have allowed expansion. They eat native fruit, leaves and flowers and sometimes forage on the ground. Pairs defend breeding territories and raise a single chick per nesting attempt.

The New Zealand classification is Nationally Vulnerable. Tuku Nature Reserve and nearby southern Chatham Island forest are key areas, usually accessed with permission.
