Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae, the kererū, is a large endemic forest pigeon. It differs from the Chatham Island pigeon through its smaller average size and mainland range. Adults have an iridescent green-purple head and chest above a clean white belly. Broad wings make a loud clatter during take-off.
Kererū occur across the main islands and many nearby islands where suitable trees remain. They use native forest, regenerating scrub and wooded urban areas. They swallow large fruit whole and also browse leaves and flowers. Seasonal display flights involve steep climbs followed by gliding descents.
The New Zealand classification is Not Threatened. Zealandia, Tiritiri Matangi and Dunedin Botanic Garden offer frequent close views.
