Papua is a large endemic black-and-white shag found only around the Chatham Islands. Adults show a black head and back, white belly and neck, bright facial skin and pink feet; Pitt Island shag is smaller and darker-faced.

It breeds on rocky ledges and stacks around main Chatham, Pitt and nearby islands and feeds in local coastal water. Papua dive for fish and crustaceans and construct bulky nests from sticks, seaweed and guano.

Chatham Island shag is Threatened — Nationally Vulnerable (NZ Threat Classification). Storm damage, fishing nets, disturbance and a small island range threaten colonies. Harbours and rocky headlands around main Chatham Island provide regular views.
