Resident groups use the Bay of Islands, wider Northland, Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland. They occupy bays, sounds and deeper channels. They are social predators of fish and squid. Groups cooperate during feeding and maintain shifting social relationships.

The species is Nationally Vulnerable in New Zealand. Disturbance is an important local concern. The Bay of Islands, Marlborough Sounds and Doubtful Sound are recognised locations. Sightings are never guaranteed.
