Sus scrofa is an introduced pig established in many New Zealand districts. It differs from domestic-looking stock through a leaner build, bristly coat and longer snout, though ancestry is mixed. Adults are bulky with short legs, a mobile snout and coarse dark hair. Males may show prominent tusks and a raised shoulder profile.
Feral pigs occur in patchy populations on both main islands and some offshore islands. They favour forest and scrub near open feeding areas. They root for tubers, fungi and invertebrates and also eat carrion and small animals. They are intelligent, mostly nocturnal and often travel in family groups.
New Zealand treats feral pigs as Introduced. Northland and Te Urewera contain wild pigs, but they are secretive and not a dependable viewing target.
