Rusa unicolor is a large introduced deer with a restricted North Island distribution. It differs from rusa deer through its much larger build, coarse dark coat and heavier three-tined antlers. Adults are dark brown with large rounded ears and a short tail. Stags have thick-necked profiles and rugged antlers.

New Zealand sambar occur mainly in coastal Manawatū and Rangitīkei. They favour dense cover near wetlands, forest and farmland. They browse foliage and also graze, often emerging at night. Animals are generally solitary or form small groups.

Wetland and forest edges in the Rangitīkei district offer a chance, although viewing is difficult.
