Cervus nippon is an introduced deer centred on the central North Island. It differs from red deer through its smaller build and adult coat that often retains pale spots. The coat is chestnut with spots in summer and darker in winter. A dark dorsal stripe and white rump patch are useful marks.
Its New Zealand range is focused on the Kaimanawa and Kaweka ranges. It uses forest, shrubland and tussock margins. It browses leaves, shoots and herbs and also grazes. Males whistle during the rut rather than giving the red deer’s deep roar.
New Zealand treats sika deer as Introduced. Kaimanawa Forest Park and Kaweka Forest Park hold wild animals, though sightings require patience.
