Mustela nivalis is the smallest introduced mustelid in New Zealand. It differs from the stoat through its shorter body and brown tail without a black tip. It has a narrow chestnut back and white or cream underside. Its movements are quick, low and sinuous.
It is patchily distributed, chiefly in open country on the main islands. Dry farmland in Canterbury supports some populations. It hunts mice, insects, lizards and small birds. Activity can occur by day or night, often under dense cover.
New Zealand treats the weasel as Introduced. It is occasionally seen along rural Canterbury roads, but there is no reliable viewing location.
