Apteryx maxima is the largest kiwi and inhabits the northwest South Island. It differs from little spotted kiwi through its much greater size, heavier bill and coarse pale spotting. The plumage is grey-brown with bold pale streaks and spots. Strong legs and a substantial bill suit rugged upland terrain.
It occurs in fragmented populations from northwest Nelson to Arthur’s Pass. Habitats range from mountain forest and scrub to alpine tussock. It probes for earthworms, beetle larvae and other soil animals and also eats plant material. Pairs defend large territories and are primarily nocturnal.
The New Zealand classification is Nationally Vulnerable. Heaphy Track and Paparoa National Park cross its range, but seeing one without specialist guidance is unlikely.
