Size

Height 50–60 cm

Apteryx rowi is the rare brown kiwi naturally associated with Ōkārito. It differs from southern brown kiwi through genetics, a paler often greyish face and its highly restricted natural range. It is a medium-sized flightless bird with soft brown-grey plumage and a long pale bill. Males and females give contrasting whistle-like calls.

The principal wild population is in Ōkārito forest on the West Coast. Managed populations also occur on predator-free islands and within fenced sanctuaries. Rowi feed at night on soil invertebrates, fallen fruit and other small foods. Pairs maintain territories and may share incubation more than some other kiwi.

The New Zealand classification is Nationally Endangered. Take an authorised night tour at Ōkārito; free-ranging sightings elsewhere are not dependable.
