Gygis alba is an elegant white tropical tern with a tiny New Zealand breeding population. It differs from other terns through its entirely white plumage, black bill and large dark eyes. Adults are pure white with translucent-looking wings, a slim black bill and black eye-ring. Their shallowly notched tail is less forked than many terns.

In the New Zealand region it is associated with the Kermadec Islands. Worldwide it occupies tropical oceanic islands and forages over nearby seas. It catches small fish and squid by dipping into the surface. A single egg is laid directly on a bare branch or ledge without a nest.

The New Zealand classification is Nationally Critical. Raoul Island is the principal locality, but public access is restricted.
