Charadrius bicinctus, the pohowera, is an endemic-breeding plover with partial migration overseas. It differs from New Zealand dotterel through its smaller size and two strong breeding breast-bands. Breeding adults show a narrow black upper band and broad chestnut lower band. Non-breeding birds are plainer, with a pale eyebrow and subdued chest markings.
It breeds on South Island braided rivers, coastal beaches and open inland ground across New Zealand. Many birds migrate to Australia or northern New Zealand after breeding. It takes insects, worms and small crustaceans with quick runs and pauses. Ground nests and chicks are vulnerable to floods, vehicles and predators.
The New Zealand classification is Declining. Ashley Rakahuri River, Mackenzie Basin riverbeds and Kaikōura beaches offer seasonal sightings.
