Range
Rangatira (Chatham Islands) and managed islands
Size
Length 20 cm
Thinornis novaeseelandiae, the tūturuatu, is a small endemic plover confined to intensively managed island populations. It differs from New Zealand dotterel through its smaller size, bold black face and chestnut crown. Adults have a dark facial mask, white forehead, chestnut crown and pale underparts. The bill is orange with a dark tip, and the legs are orange-yellow.
Wild populations persist on a few predator-managed islands, including Rangatira in the Chathams. Birds use rocky shores, beaches, tidal platforms and short coastal turf. They pick small crustaceans, insects and marine worms from shorelines. Pairs defend territories and nest in sheltered scrapes or cavities.
The New Zealand classification is Nationally Critical. Public viewing is most realistic on Waikawa Portland Island with authorised access; Rangatira access is restricted.
