Length 22–24 cm
Coenocorypha aucklandica is a subantarctic snipe centred on the Auckland Islands. It differs from Snares Island snipe through genetics, range and fine plumage and measurement characters. It is compact and intricately mottled, with a long straight bill and short legs. Rounded wings permit only short low flights.
It occurs on predator-free islands in the Auckland group, with related forms treated separately by some authorities. Tussock, bogs, herbfields and coastal vegetation are used. It probes damp ground for worms, amphipods and insects. Birds remain under cover and are often active at dusk or night.
The New Zealand classification is Naturally Uncommon. Enderby Island expedition landings offer a chance, although the birds are secretive.
