The barking gecko is a green tree gecko of the lower North Island named for its sharp defensive call. Green upperparts are dotted or blotched with pale markings; a blue mouth with a black tongue helps distinguish it from neighbouring green geckos.

It occurs from the central and southern North Island to the Wellington region and nearby islands. It climbs and basks in dense foliage, eating insects, fruit and nectar and barking or gaping when threatened.

Barking gecko is At Risk — Declining (NZ Threat Classification). Predator-managed lower North Island sanctuaries and shrublands offer the best prospects.
