Anas nesiotis
Habitat
Subantarctic tussock, bogs and coastal margins
Range
Campbell Island and refuge islands
Size
Length 38–45 cm
Anas nesiotis is a flightless endemic teal restored from near extinction. It differs from Auckland Island teal through genetics, its Campbell Island range and subtle plumage proportions. This compact dark-brown duck has tiny wings and stout legs. Males show a green head sheen and richer chestnut tones than females.
It now occurs on Campbell Island and predator-free refuge islands used during recovery. Dense tussock, wet ground, streams and sheltered shores provide cover. It takes amphipods, insects and vegetation, mainly under cover or after dark. Secretive pairs move on foot through tunnels in tussock.
The New Zealand classification is Nationally Increasing. Campbell Island expedition visitors have only a small chance because the birds are highly secretive.
