Tadorna variegata, the pūtangitangi, is an endemic shelduck found throughout New Zealand. It differs from other local ducks through strong sexual dimorphism and goose-like grazing habits. Females have a white head and chestnut body, while males have a dark head and blackish body. Both show white wing panels in flight.
It occurs across both main islands and on Stewart Island/Rakiura, with local records farther offshore. It thrives around pasture, lakes, rivers and estuaries. Pairs graze grass and take aquatic plants and invertebrates. Large flocks gather to moult after breeding.
The New Zealand classification is Not Threatened. Lake Rotorua, Lake Te Anau and rural wetlands nationwide offer easy viewing.
