Length 40–48 cm
Anas aucklandica is a flightless endemic teal confined to the Auckland Islands. It differs from Campbell Island teal through genetics, range and generally darker, less strongly patterned plumage. It is a small dark-brown duck with reduced wings and strong legs. Males have a greenish head sheen and chestnut breast, while females are plainer.
It survives on predator-free islands within the Auckland Islands group. Birds forage along sheltered coasts, streams, pools and tussock margins. It eats marine invertebrates, insects and plant material, often feeding at night. Pairs remain close to dense cover and rarely enter exposed water.
The New Zealand classification is Nationally Vulnerable. Auckland Islands expedition landings may encounter it on Enderby Island; access is tightly controlled.
