Aythya novaeseelandiae, the pāpango, is New Zealand’s only endemic diving duck. It differs from dabbling ducks through its compact body, rear-set legs and habit of diving completely underwater. Males are glossy black with yellow eyes, while females are dark brown with brown eyes. Both show a rounded head and bluish-grey bill.

It is found on deep freshwater lakes and ponds across both main islands. Urban lake populations have expanded where water quality and protection are suitable. It dives for aquatic insects, snails and plant material. Birds surface buoyantly and gather in compact flocks.

The New Zealand classification is Not Threatened. Lake Rotorua, Lake Taupō and Queenstown Gardens provide close, dependable views.
