The dwarf sperm whale is the smallest living whale and occurs rarely in New Zealand. It is known mainly from strandings. It resembles the pygmy sperm whale but is smaller, with a taller central dorsal fin. Adults are about 2–2.7 metres long.

It inhabits warm deep water near continental slopes. Northern New Zealand waters are generally more suitable. It feeds on squid, fish and crustaceans during deep dives. Small groups surface quietly and rarely approach boats.

The species is Data Deficient nationally. Local population size and trend are unknown. No New Zealand location offers predictable sightings. Offshore Northland or Bay of Plenty trips provide only a small chance.
