Habitat
Tropical rocky islands and offshore waters
Range
Kermadec Islands
Size
Length 28–32 cm
Anous albivittus is a small pale noddy breeding in northern New Zealand waters. It differs from black noddy through its light grey body, white head and slimmer appearance. The head is white, shading into a pale grey body with darker flight feathers. A fine black bill and dark eye complete its delicate appearance.
New Zealand populations occur mainly in the Kermadec Islands, with occasional records farther south. Birds use rocky stacks and cliffs beside warm oceanic feeding grounds. They take tiny fish and marine invertebrates by dipping and hovering over the surface. Colonies nest on narrow rock ledges.
The New Zealand classification is Relict. Kermadec expedition access offers the only realistic New Zealand opportunity and is tightly restricted.
