Anous stolidus is a tropical tern that breeds locally in the Kermadec Islands. It differs from black noddy through its larger size, browner plumage and less sharply contrasting pale cap. The body is chocolate-brown with a pale grey-white forehead and crown. The bill is stout and dark, and the tail is shallowly notched.
In New Zealand it is centred on the Kermadec Islands and adjacent warm waters. The species is widespread across tropical oceans worldwide. It takes small fish and squid from the surface, often around feeding predators. Colonies nest on ledges, ground or vegetation depending on location.
The New Zealand classification is Coloniser. Raoul Island and other Kermadec sites require permits; ordinary mainland viewing is unlikely.
