The pygmy sperm whale is a small deep-water whale seldom observed alive. Most New Zealand records are strandings. It has a blunt head, underslung jaw and small curved dorsal fin. Adults are roughly 2.7–3.8 metres long.

It occupies deep temperate and tropical water beyond the shelf. Strandings occur around both main islands. It feeds mainly on deep-water squid. When threatened it can release dark intestinal fluid before diving.

The species is Uncommon nationally. Its quiet offshore habits complicate monitoring. There is no reliable site. Deep pelagic trips from Kaikōura or the Bay of Plenty offer only a remote possibility.
