Mesoplodon layardii is a distinctive Southern Hemisphere beaked whale. Adult males differ from all close relatives because two strap-like teeth curve over the upper jaw and restrict its gape. It has a dark back, pale underside and a long narrow beak. Mature males show bold pale markings and the unmistakable arched teeth.
It occurs in deep waters around New Zealand and throughout cool southern oceans. Live sightings are rare, and many records are strandings. It dives for squid and deep-water fish. The male’s restricted gape still permits suction feeding on soft prey.
The New Zealand classification is Data Deficient. No site is dependable; deep-water voyages off Kaikōura provide only a remote possibility.
