The Takitimu gecko is a secretive mountain gecko restricted to the Takitimu Range of Southland. Its grey-brown body has pale and dark blotches that resemble lichen and rock, with a broad head and dark mottled eyes.
It is known from rocky subalpine sites in the Takitimu Mountains. It shelters deep in rock crevices and emerges in suitable conditions to hunt insects.
Takitimu gecko is Threatened — Nationally Critical (NZ Threat Classification). The rugged range and cryptic pattern make encounters rare outside targeted surveys.
