The southern striped gecko is a slender, striped tree gecko with isolated populations around Cook Strait and the upper South Island. Cream longitudinal stripes cross a brown or grey back and tail, bordered by darker lines; its toes and prehensile tail suit climbing.

Populations occur in the Marlborough Sounds, Nelson region and parts of the lower North Island. It emerges at night to hunt insects and take nectar or fruit among branches.

Southern striped gecko is Threatened — Nationally Vulnerable (NZ Threat Classification). It is secretive and local, and most dependable records come from authorised night surveys at known sites.
