The Aupōuri gecko is a bright green tree gecko confined to the far northern Aupōuri Peninsula. Its green back may carry cream markings, while yellow-orange lips and a lilac-pink mouth with a red tongue distinguish it from other North Island green geckos.
It ranges south from the North Cape area to around northern Houhora Harbour. It basks in foliage by day and also moves at night, eating moths, flies, beetles, spiders, nectar, fruit and honeydew.
Aupouri gecko is At Risk — Declining (NZ Threat Classification); forest clearance and mammalian predators are principal threats. Scrubby forest in the northern Aupōuri Peninsula offers the only chance, though the gecko is well camouflaged.
