The Northland green gecko is a large arboreal gecko restricted to northern North Island vegetation. Bright green upperparts carry pale spots or stripes; a blue mouth with a red tongue separates it from the Aupōuri gecko’s pink-lilac mouth.
It occurs through Northland south of the Aupōuri Peninsula, including several offshore islands. It moves through shrubs and trees by day, using a prehensile tail and feeding on insects, nectar and fruit.
Northland green gecko is At Risk — Declining (NZ Threat Classification). Predator-managed Northland reserves with sunny native shrubland provide the best chance.
