Stercorarius pomarinus is an Arctic-breeding skua migrating through New Zealand seas. It differs from Arctic skua through its heavier body, broader wings and adult spoon-shaped central tail feathers. Adults in breeding plumage may be pale or dark, with a dark cap and broad breast band. The twisted spoon-like tail streamers are diagnostic when intact.
It occurs offshore around New Zealand mainly during migration and the austral summer. Birds breed on Arctic tundra and range widely at sea outside breeding. It takes fish and marine animals and pursues other seabirds until they drop food. It also feeds on lemmings while breeding in the Arctic.
The New Zealand classification is Migrant. Pelagic trips from Kaikōura and Cook Strait crossings offer seasonal chances.
