Stercorarius antarcticus is a large predatory seabird breeding on New Zealand’s subantarctic islands. It differs from South Polar skua through its bulkier build and generally warmer brown, more heavily streaked plumage. The bird is dark brown with pale golden streaking on the head and neck. Broad wings show bold white flashes at the bases of the primaries.
It breeds on the Chatham and subantarctic islands and ranges through southern New Zealand seas. Colonies and territories occur near penguin and other seabird nesting areas. It scavenges, hunts eggs and chicks, takes fish and steals food from other seabirds. Pairs defend nesting territories aggressively.
The New Zealand classification is Nationally Vulnerable. Enderby Island, Campbell Island and Chatham Islands expeditions provide regular encounters.
